Abstract

The aim of this study was to analyse the passes and the subsequent passing possession made from a center pass to the first possible outcome (goal, shot or turnover). A total of 400 centre passes were analysed from four teams within the 2018 Netball Superleague from eight matches (n=100 per team). Variables that were explored in this study included: time in possession of the ball, the initial outcome from the center pass, defensive pressure from the opposition, court location on the first and subsequent passes made from the center pass, the receiving players and the potential passing options. Chi-Square tests of association saw a significant association between the number of passes made and the outcome (χ210 = 144.309, p < 0.001, φc =0.425), the outcome to the defence (χ24=34.731, p < 0.001, φc =0.208), and the number of passing opportunities to the outcome (χ28 = 103.929, p < 0.001, φc = 0.360). Suggesting that the longer in possession the more goal score opportunities that occur. Future research should look in to the tactics used by defending teams on a center pass and the resulting actions from them
